Deregulated U.S. Electricity & Natural Gas Markets
Energy deregulation separates the delivery of energy (wires and pipes managed by your local utility) from the supply of energy (the power generated and sold by competitive retail suppliers). If you live or operate in any of the states below, you have the legal right to choose your supplier.
How Your Energy Bill is Actually Split
Many business owners and homeowners don't realize their bill consists of two separate charges:
1. Delivery / Transmission Charge
Paid to: Your local utility (e.g. Oncor, ComEd, PECO, ConEd).
What it covers: Maintaining physical power poles, high-voltage wires, transformers, reading meters, and dispatching emergency repair crews during storm outages.
2. Generation / Supply Charge
Paid to: The Retail Energy Supplier (REP) of your choice.
What it covers: The actual commodity of electricity (kWh) or natural gas (therms/CCF) generated at power plants, wind farms, and solar installations.
